Fog Panther v0.8.2 - Painting, Color, and Reach
September 26, 2026
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fog Panther v0.8.2 brings a completely new brush engine, a dedicated Photo Editor, a new generation of panels for properties, color and swatches, and professional color settings with bundled industry-standard ICC profiles. Layer effects and masks gain precision, GPU-accelerated filters now run on far more graphics hardware, and Fog Panther is now free to use without a time limit for work saved in its native format. The release also reaches more of Linux than ever, with packages verified on current Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch, CachyOS and Manjaro systems.
A New Brush Engine
Every paint tool now draws through one shared brush engine. A new Brush Settings panel exposes the full set of dynamics: texture with Protect Texture, dual brush, wet edges, per-stroke and per-tip color dynamics, airbrush build-up, noise, flip jitter, fade, and stroke smoothing, with a live stroke preview as you adjust them. Brush presets keep your favorite setups a click away, and existing brush libraries import directly from Photoshop .abr files.
Clone, Healing Brush, Spot Healing, Smudge, History Brush and Dodge/Burn now share the same engine, so they respond to pressure and dynamics consistently. Brushes also paint directly on 32-bit float, Lab and indexed-color layers.
Photo Editor
A dedicated Photo Editor window gathers photographic adjustments into one focused workspace next to your document, so you can develop an image while continuing to work on the canvas.
Properties, Color and Swatches Panels
A new Properties panel shows the controls for whatever is selected, whether a layer, a mask, text or an adjustment, without opening a dialog. The Color panel offers precise sliders and typed values across color models, with an out-of-gamut warning for print work. The Swatches panel manages swatch libraries, and a new Color Table dialog edits indexed-color palettes directly.
Professional Color Settings
A new Color Settings dialog configures working spaces and conversion behavior, with presets you can save and share. Fog Panther now ships Adobe's standard CMYK press and RGB ICC profiles, so common print conditions are available out of the box.
Export As
Export As offers a large preview, a side-by-side comparison of the original and the exported result, and a live file size estimate, so you can balance quality and size before you save.
More Faithful Layer Effects and Masks
Layer effects in PSD files render much more faithfully: Bevel & Emboss gains contours, drop shadows support multiple instances and choke, and glow, satin, stroke and gradient overlay effects follow the source document more closely. Masks gain Density and Feather controls, and Free Transform now works as a full transform session with a visible transform box for floating selections.
Better PSD Text and a Smarter File Browser
Text exported to PSD keeps its placement, styling and bounds more accurately, and font names with trailing style words are recognized correctly. The file browser shows previews and image dimensions, remembers thumbnails between visits, and lists removable drives. In the native and AppImage packages it also lists network locations, opens remote files at local speed, and saves reliably to network shares.
GPU Filters on More Hardware
GPU-accelerated filters now run on a much wider range of graphics hardware, including older Intel and AMD GPUs that previously fell back to the CPU. The graphics device list in Preferences shows each GPU once, even inside the Flatpak, and an interrupted GPU check from an earlier version is retried automatically after the upgrade. The CPU blur was also corrected so that fully opaque layers stay fully opaque after blurring.
Free to Use, Licensed for Everything
Fog Panther no longer has a trial period. An unlicensed installation is free to use indefinitely and saves in the native .fog format. A license unlocks every other save format, Export, Export As, batch processing and printing. Licenses are perpetual.
Reaching More of Linux
Every package was installed and verified on current distributions before release:
- The .deb packages install on Ubuntu 24.04 and its derivatives, such as Linux Mint 22, and on Debian 13. Debian and Ubuntu packages are also provided for 64-bit ARM, including Raspberry Pi OS.
- A single .rpm package serves both Fedora 44 and the upcoming Fedora 45.
- The Arch package installs on Arch Linux, CachyOS and Manjaro, and carries its own copy of the OpenEXR libraries so distribution updates no longer break it.
- The Flatpak moves to the GNOME 51 runtime.
- The Snap Store receives this release, and Ubuntu 26.04 users install through the Snap.
- The one-line installer detects when a native package cannot install and switches to the Flatpak, Snap or AppImage automatically.
Every package now includes the license files of the third-party libraries it bundles.
Bug Fixes and Stability
This release includes a broad round of correctness work: File > Quit can no longer discard unsaved work, RAW files develop at the camera's as-shot white balance, the bundled RAW decoder recognizes newer cameras, alpha channels follow crops and canvas changes, and numerous rendering, undo and interface refinements. Translations are updated in all six supported languages.
System Requirements
- Linux with GTK4 (>= 4.10)
- Optional GPU acceleration requires Vulkan or OpenGL 4.3
- Available as Flatpak, Snap, .deb, .rpm, Arch and AppImage packages
