Fog Panther v0.5.0 — Nine New Filters and Expanded Adjustments

March 17, 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fog Panther v0.5.0 delivers a major expansion of the filter and
adjustment toolset, adding nine new filters and four new non-destructive
adjustment layer types. The Filter menu has been reorganized into
categorized submenus to accommodate the growing filter library.

New Filters

-----------

Motion Blur — Simulates camera or subject motion along a configurable
angle (0-360°) and distance (1-500px). Samples pixels along the
motion vector and averages them for a smooth directional blur.

Radial Blur — Two methods: Spin rotates samples around a center point
for a rotational effect, and Zoom samples along radial lines for a
pull/push zoom effect. Amount 1-100 with configurable center point.

Surface Blur — An edge-preserving blur that smooths flat areas while
keeping sharp edges intact. Radius controls the blur size, and
threshold determines how much color difference is tolerated before
an edge is preserved.

High Pass — Extracts high-frequency detail by subtracting a Gaussian
blur from the original image. Essential for frequency separation
retouching workflows.

Add Noise — Adds random noise with Gaussian or uniform distribution.
Amount 0-100%, with a monochromatic option that applies the same
noise value to all channels for film-grain effects.

Posterize — Reduces color levels per channel (2-255), creating a
banded color effect.

Threshold — Converts to pure black and white at a configurable
luminance cutoff (0-255).

Black & White — Weighted grayscale conversion with six color channel
sliders (Reds, Yellows, Greens, Cyans, Blues, Magentas) ranging from
-200 to +300. Smooth transitions between adjacent color ranges
produce natural-looking results.

Photo Filter — Simulates a colored lens filter. Blends the image with
a configurable tint color at a specified density (0-100%), with an
option to preserve the original luminosity. Defaults to a warming
filter at 25% density.

New Adjustment Layer Types

--------------------------

Four of the new filters are also available as non-destructive
adjustment layers, bringing the total from 8 to 12 types:

  - Posterize
  - Threshold
  - Black & White
  - Photo Filter

Each includes a live-preview editing dialog accessible by double-
clicking the adjustment layer in the layer panel. All types support
layer masks, opacity, blend modes, and clipping.

Filter Menu Reorganization

--------------------------

The Filter menu has been reorganized with a Blur submenu:

  Filter
├── Blur ▸ Gaussian Blur, Box Blur, Motion Blur, Radial Blur,
  │         Surface Blur
  ├── Sharpen
  ├── Add Noise
  └── High Pass

Adjustment-type filters (Posterize, Threshold, Black & White, Photo
Filter) are available under Image > Adjustments alongside the existing
entries.

System Requirements

-------------------

- Linux with GTK4 (>= 4.10)
- Available as Flatpak, Snap, .deb, .rpm, and Arch packages
